Some images used on this CD were too large to fit the screen - these can be zoomed in upon by
right-clicking on them (use CMD-Click on a Mac) and dragging the picture around with the mouse.
These images will always show the icon (top left) when they are first displayed. The second
icon appears on images that allow the user to add comments to the picture. To add some text,
click on the image where you want the text to appear and type into the box that pops up. Text
can be re-edited by clicking on it again.

About Florence Nightingale
It is important for teachers to appreciate how the life and work of Florence Nightingale
were so much more than the Crimean War and the resultant changes to military hospital care.
She was a very talented, astute, ‘politically aware’ woman who made excellent uses of
her fame and influence to bring about change in society.
During the Crimean War there were many other heroic nurses whose stories we should also know. Mary
Seacole distinguished herself nursing on the battlefields at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855. Sometimes
the myth surrounding the Lady with the Lamp can obscure the equally important wartime contributions of
others.
Though the QCA unit tends to focus upon the Crimean War it is important to emphasise to children
that Florence Nightingale’s influence was far reaching. Over the page are a few examples:
